London workshop for Oblique3
Members of Oblique3, a student-run contemporary music ensemble, have been invited to attend a day-long workshop session with distinguished composer Peter Wiegold, professor of composition and head of musical research at Brunel University.
Martin Humphries, MMus Composition and director of Oblique3, explains how this came about:
“I first met Peter when he did a workshop at the School of Music last year with his ensemble notes inégale. Myself and a few others were then invited to perform with the group as part of the School’s Concert Series last year, a very unexpected surprise!”
Those sessions led Martin to start his own ensemble last year. Oblique3 takes its name from the prominent Dame Barbara Hepworth statue flanking the entrance to the School of Music.
Martin said: “Oblique3 has quickly been developing a reputation within the student community as a pioneering and ambitious group of likeminded musicians. This trip to London is the first of many large projects we have planned for this academic year, including recording soundtracks for student art films and hosting our own contemporary music evening.
In the spring, we will be performing my most ambitious score to date: ‘Aeon’. The work Is a 12-hour long continuous piece of music and will be performed as a musical marathon in aid of charity.”
