When the Mande world came to Cardiff
Master musicians from the Mande cultural world in West Africa performed at the School over the weekend.
The concert – The magical Mande world comes to Cardiff – was led by Idrissa Camara, a charismatic dancer and musician from Guinea, Conakry.
In just two years, Camara has taken his Cardiff-based company ‘Ballet Nimba’ to acclaimed performances at London’s Southbank Centre and the main stage of WOMAD.
Putting a contemporary spin on 14th-century repertoires, Saturday’s concert included dance, vocals and instrumentalists. Idrissa was joined on stage by singer Binta Suso, virtuoso kora player Suntuo Susso, and Mohamed ‘Mobe’ Camara.
The concert was reviewed in the South Wales Echo and described as “electrifying set of traditional African songs infused with a 21st century twist”.
The musicians arrived at the School of Music on Friday for a rehearsal which was open to music students. Taking a break from rehearsals, they also brought their energetic sound to the Students’ Union for impromptu lunchtime performances at The Taf and The Kitchen.
