The Fairley World Music Collection
It is with sadness that the School of Music notes the recent passing of respected broadcaster and ethnomusicologist Jan Fairley.
Throughout her long and varied career, Jan served as a member of the editorial board of the journal Popular Music, as a member of the ethnomusicology editorial team of the New Grove Dictionary, and as the Chair of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM). Her extensive research activities covered political singer-songwriters in Latin America and Spain, Cuban music and flamenco.
As a features writer and critic, Jan wrote for a range of publications including The Guardian, The Scotsman, fRoots, and Songlines. She also made cultural documentaries for BBC World Service radio, pioneered world music on BBC Radio Scotland with the weekly programme Earthbeat, and made many music/cultural series and documentaries for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4.
The School of Music has been bequeathed Jan’s world music archive, The Fairley World Music Collection. Included in the collection are some 5,000 CDs, all of her radio materials (including recordings, documentation, published and unpublished interviews), and full collections of world music magazines. In keeping with Jan’s wishes, the collection will be made available to students, staff and external researchers with an interest in world music.
