New professor for the School of Music

In September 2011 the School of Music will be welcoming a new member of staff:

Professor Rachel Cowgill.

Professor Cowgill has written extensively on music and musical life in Britain from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century, focusing on music as cultural history and various aspects of reception history (especially that of Italian opera).

Forthcoming publications include a exploration of music for Armistice Day commemorations in the 1920s and 1930s, a study of femininity, performance and spectatorship at the Italian Opera in early nineteenth-century London, and a book on the history of the Metropolitan Police Minstrels.

Rachel has been editor of the Journal of the Royal Musical Association since 2007.
