Cardiff music students on BBC Radios 2 and 3
A 2008 graduate and a final-year student make their broadcasting debuts on BBC national radio this autumn.
On the evening of Monday 13 October, Christopher Andrews (BMus, 2008) was surprised to receive a phone-call saying that he would be appearing on BBC Radio 3 in ten minutes' time. His performance of Bartók's Allegro barbaro, which he had given the previous Saturday at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff as part of BBC Radio 3's 'Play to the Nation' Pianothon, had been selected for broadcast. Christopher was not the only Cardiff University student to participate in the Cardiff Pianothon, as among the other pianists was Charlotte Yuen (BA Joint Honours in Music and English, 2007).
The radio debut of Tom Davoren is the climax of a momentous few months for this final-year BMus student at Cardiff University. His composition Diversions on Calon Lan for trombone and brass band (2007) will receive its world premiere broadcast on BBC Radio 2's programme 'Listen to the Band' (21.30-22.00) on Friday 21 November 2008. The performers will be Jonathan Pippen with the BTM Band, conductor Nigel Seaman, who also gave the world premiere at St David's Hall in Cardiff on 2 March 2008.
Among Tom's other projects have been orchestrating the brass section of Errolyn Warren's Carbon 12: A Choral Symphony for Welsh National Opera (premiered on 16 June 2008 at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff). He is also involved in preparation for 'Brass in Concert' on 15 November at The Sage, Gateshead, and his i bob un (2008) will be given its first performance, by the BTM Band, on 11 December at St David's Hall, Cardiff.
