Professor Alun Hoddinott (1929-2008)

March 2008

The distinguished Welsh composer, and former Professor of Music at Cardiff, Alun Hoddinott died on 11 March 2008 aged 78. He had battled illness for some time. Alun Hoddinott joined the then Department of Music at University College, Cardiff, in 1959, becoming Professor and Head of Department in 1967 at the time when a new purpose-built building was being planned. It became operational in 1970 and it was officially opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1971. Alun Hoddinott was a towering presence and he boldly shaped the Department's life until his retirement in 1987. His impact on the musical life of the University and beyond was also immense and no-one, especially his colleagues and hundreds of students, will forget him.
