Launch of Concert Programmes Database

December 2007

The School of Music is delighted to announce the launch of a second significant database that has been created under the guidance of Professor John Tyrrell. Officially launched on 10 December 2007, the Concert Programmes Database is the result of a research collaboration between the School of Music at Cardiff University and The Royal College of Music. It provides collection-level descriptions of concert programme holdings at leading libraries, archives and museums in the UK and Ireland, thereby improving access to a vital source of information about musical life from the eighteenth century to the present day.

The database is intended as a guide to finding programme collections, rather than providing full details of the content of individual programmes. The institutional coverage is extensive and includes the British Library, the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Bodleian Library, Oxford and the national libraries of Scotland and Ireland, as well as repositories in Aldeburgh, Birmingham, Bradford, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Leeds and Manchester. The database is hosted by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

The Concert Programmes project is led by Professor John Tyrrell (Cardiff University), Dr Paul Banks (Centre for Performance History, RCM), Dr Rupert Ridgewell (British Library and Honorary Lecturer, Cardiff University) and Ms Deborah Lee (CPH, RCM).
