Cardiff University Choir and Symphony Orchestra
Friday 19 March 2010
St David's Hall, Cardiff, 19.30
Mark Eager and David Ponsford (conductors)
Dvorák - Slavonic Dance No. 6, op. 46
Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, op. 30
Mussorgsky - Excerpts from Boris Godunov
The Slavonic Dances established Dvorák’s reputation on the international stage. Inspired by Brahms’s Hungarian Dances, and originally composed for piano four hands, the pieces are lively and memorable. Rachmaninov’s third piano concerto enjoys a reputation as one of the most technically demanding in the repertoire. In this performance, Rachmaninov will be present in St David’s Hall, spiritually if not physically, as Rex Lawson, internationally renowned concert pianolist, will fascinate us with Rachmaninov’s own pianola ‘recording’ of the work. Mussorgsky’s only completed opera, Boris Godunov, has been praised for its originality and for the dramatic power of its choruses. The University Choir and Orchestra combine to perform three of Boris Godunov’s best-loved scenas.
