Many full-time postgraduate research students, typically in their second and/or third year of study, are given the opportunity to develop their academic experience by participating in the undergraduate teaching programme. The School normally advertises teaching vacancies and research students are admitted, via interview, into a pool of Associate Lecturers, from which they are selected for undertaking teaching as appropriate. Any teaching for the School shall not exceed an average of six hours per week (including preparation and marking time).
Research students cannot be obliged to carry out such duties or be given sole responsibility for a module or its assessment. The School will ensure that research students engaged in teaching activities undergo appropriate training and are mentored by an experienced member of staff.
The teaching ranges from first-year group tutorials to giving lectures to second and third-year undergraduates. Among the undergraduate modules to which postgraduates have contributed in recent years are:
