Postgraduate Seminars, Lectures and Workshops
The School of Music organises a series of seminars, lectures and workshops at which students and staff exchange experiences and views on research and compositional topics.
All postgraduate students participate in weekly seminars organised by a member of academic staff. Postgraduates discuss research issues and are invited to give presentations on their own research or compositions. These seminars are also business meetings at which practical matters concerning postgraduate study with the School may be raised.
Special seminars and workshops are also often organised as part of more extended stays by visiting scholars and composers.
John Bird Lectures
The John Bird Lectures are named after one of the School's benefactors. These colloquia take place four or five times during each semester and include guest lecturers from the UK and abroad as well as staff and postgraduate research students from the School of Music in Cardiff. All postgraduate students are expected to attend.
The School of Music organises a programme of workshops for its composition community. These workshops are usually led by visiting composers (see below) or by visiting ensembles before or after their Tuesday Evening concert. There is also a continuing cooperation with the BBC National Orchestral of Wales. Student compositions are rehearsed and recorded at these workshops, providing constructive feedback as well as a recorded document of completed works or works in progress.
