Choirs, Orchestras and Ensembles

Choir

The School of Music prides itself on its level of practical music-making and aims to do all it can to encourage and promote music-making and music appreciation within the University and City. The chief groups are the 240-strong Choral Society and Symphony Orchestra which perform under the title University Choir & University Orchestra. Membership is drawn both from music students and across campus with a large number of non-music students and staff belonging especially to the Choral Society. Rehearsals are held in the Music School Concert Hall.

There are a number of smaller groups such as the University Chamber Choir and University Chamber Orchestra which have specialised programmes; membership is by audition and non-music students are welcome to take part. The Chamber Choir numbers about 40 members; similarly, the Chamber Orchestra draws on a smaller circle of players depending on the chosen repertoire. Both are based in the Music School and run by staff.

Another important group is the Contemporary Music Group. In addition to concerts (which usually include student works) the Ensemble invites visiting composers to the School; recent visitors have included Oliver Knussen, Jonathan Harvey, George Benjamin, Anthony Payne, Simon Bainbridge, Robert Saxton, David Matthews, TV composer Christopher Gunning.
