Choirs, Orchestras and Ensembles

The School of Music prides itself on its level of practical music-making and aims to do all it can to encourage and promote music-making and music appreciation within the University and City. The chief groups are the University Symphony Orchestra and the University Symphony Chorus. Membership is drawn both from music students and across campus with a large number of non-music students and staff belonging especially to the Symphony Chorus.

There are a number of smaller groups such as the University Chamber Choir and University Chamber Orchestra which have specialised programmes; membership is by audition and non-music students are welcome to take part. The Chamber Choir numbers about 40 members; similarly, the Chamber Orchestra draws on a smaller circle of players depending on the chosen repertoire.

Another important group is the Contemporary Music Group. In addition to concerts (which usually include student works) the Ensemble invites visiting composers to the School.
