Membership of University Choir and Symphony Orchestra
Membership
of both the University Choir and Symphony Orchestra is mainly of students
in the School of Music, but both Choir and Orchestra welcome students
and staff from throughout the University and from outside.
The University Choir currently numbers about 240 singers, while the Symphony Orchestra, with about 120 players, is approximately of full symphonic proportions.
Choir
All music students have open access. For new students from other Schools in the university and new members from the local community, entry will be subject to a brief audition (aural ability, sight-reading, vocal range). For current members from Schools other than Music and those from the local community, re-auditions will take place in January 2011.
Orchestra
The standard expected for new entrants is a minimum of Grade 8 or
equivalent. Entry for wind and brass will be by short informal audition.
String players are invited to audition for principal positions; members
will be expected to have Grade 8 or be prepared to audition at the
discretion of the conductor.
