Studying music at Cardiff University has exceeded all my expectations.
I have been surrounded by genuine, passionate and enthusiastic
lecturers from the very first term and they have accompanied
me through a very diverse and challenging course. One minute
I am in the Music Library researching a composer and the next
I find myself at the front of the School's Concert Hall directing
the Schubert Ensemble who are making a recording of one of my
own compositions! Other 'ordinary' nights can include journeying
across Wales in a coach packed with students and instruments
to perform a programme as the Chamber Orchestra.
The course was perfect for me, allowing me to concentrate
on my strengths. It is well balanced and gave me rounded musical
knowledge and skills with many opportunities for personal musical
development, such as masterclasses by visiting professionals
and copious opportunities to perform. The module choices were
interesting and well taught; and the tutors were helpful, friendly
and supportive. Cardiff is a wonderful city with most places
within walking distance and a great variety of amenities, from
the stadium to excellent theatres, concerts, shops, restaurants
and a thriving student nightlife. The last three years have been
a fantastic, highly enjoyable experience.
The School of Music is very welcoming and people go out of
their way to make sure others are OK. The lecturers are friendly
and many have an open door policy so you can ask for help or
even just a chat. The course is designed to give the students
an all-round education in all the major aspects of music. The
practice rooms and in-house Music Library allow you access to
facilities without having to traipse all over the University
to find them.
I totally enjoyed studying English Literature and Music here
at Cardiff University. The BA scheme offered great flexibility
and I was able to personalise my degree by choosing modules in
which I had the most interest. The final-year dissertation in
particular allowed me to bridge the disciplines as I applied
the critical skills required for English essays to my study of
Puccini's Madama Butterfly.
The music course at Cardiff University has been really
varied and enjoyable, and it has allowed me the freedom to focus
on my preferred aspects of music such as jazz, performance practice
and popular culture. The School as a whole is really friendly,
and the lecturers are approachable and supportive. I knew when
I came for my interview that I could be happy here, and now I can't
imagine having studied anywhere else.
Cardiff is unique and satisfying as a city. I had a great
time as a music student and it was definitely a rewarding experience.
Being an EU student from Germany, I didn't really know what to
expect in the beginning, but the University was a fantastic place
to stay. The academic support was great and all the lecturers
were really welcoming and always there to help and advise you.
I certainly enjoyed the three years in Cardiff with the many
friends I made from different countries. Furthermore, the opportunity
to perform in St David's Hall and the Wales Millennium Centre
was an intensifying and wonderful experience.
