Psychosis and major affective disorders

Improving understanding of psychosis and mood disorders to inform better treatment.

Our researchers are working to better understand how genetic and environmental factors interact to trigger episodes of major psychotic and mood disorders including:

• schizophrenia
• bipolar disorder
• depression.

By gaining a better understanding of these conditions we hope to play a part in advancing the prevention and treatment of these debilitating illnesses.

The research involves collaboration of many researchers in differing disciplines, and has benefitted from thousands of volunteers with first hand experience of these mental health conditions.

Meeting the challenge

A key part of our research philosophy is that mental illness as a challenge that can be overcome. Mental health campaigner Jonny Benjamin talks to Prof. Mick O'Donovan about his diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder and research in the field of schizophrenia.
