You will have the opportunity to study abroad in any Portuguese-speaking country in your third year.

Portuguese is a language with global importance which is spoken across the world from Portugal to Brazil to several countries and regions in Africa and Asia.

Portuguese has been identified by The British Council as one of the most vital languages for the future of the UK and is one of the most widely spoken community languages in Britain.

Whether you start as an absolute beginner, or already have advanced knowledge of Portuguese, by the end of your degree in Portuguese you will be fluent in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages, and you will have gained a broad understanding of the history and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world.

BA Portuguese is available as a Joint Honours degree programme in the School of Modern Languages (together with another language or with Translation). The programme is supported by Camões-Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua.

Why study Portuguese?

The degree in Portuguese provides an opportunity to gain professional experience in teaching and translation. You will receive specialist training to develop your skills in linguistic and intercultural communication and will study a broad range of topics relating to the history, societies and cultures of the Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) world.

Year abroad options

The Year Abroad is an opportunity to enhance and deepen your linguistic fluency and cultural understanding, and gain valuable experience studying or working in another country.

If you study two languages, you will divide the year between two countries, one where each of the languages is spoken.

If you study Portuguese and Translation, you will spend the whole year in a Portuguese-speaking country.
