International students

The School of Modern Languages is home to a vibrant, multicultural, community of students from across the world.

Our programmes have been designed to reflect this and we take pride in the excellent teaching and personal support we can offer you across our suite of undergraduate degrees, postgraduate taught programmes and PhD pathways.

All our programmes have your employability at their core and are designed to allow you to tailor your studies to suit your specific interests and chosen career path.

Support

Our academics visit various countries throughout the academic cycle, offering information about Cardiff and our courses as well as guest lectures and interactive workshops.

We also offer webinars where you have the chance to meet key course contacts as well as individual virtual sessions which allow you to get to know us better and ask any questions you may have.

For students interested in Translation we have developed a free online taster course entitled ‘Working with Translation: Theory and Practice’ which is designed to introduce you to the basics of translation and interpreting.

Sign up on its welcome page for notifications about the next session and explore the varied roles played by professional and non-professional translators and interpreters in the contemporary world.

Student experience

International Students choose to study at Cardiff University for many reasons. Our standing as a Russell Group university is one, while the breadth of cultural activity across the city is another.

MA student Guojiao Lis chose Cardiff University because of its academic reputation, the experienced staff and the prospect of classmates from broad spectrum of countries.

Guojiao says, “Cardiff creates a perfect environment for saturating myself into western culture and languages. I enjoy seminars the most, where all students and teachers get involved in discussion and all opinions are respected and valued.”

Guojiao Lis

"I strongly recommend Cardiff, not only because of the School’s reputation, but also the countless chances it provides to participate in cultural exchanges."

Guojiao Lis, MA Translation Studies

Nada Al-Mazrooa chose Cardiff as a city because she felt it offered a safe and quiet place for her family to live.

Nada says, “This was very important to me as a studying mother when choosing a place to live. I get to learn a new language, enjoy the countless events the school organises and develop my research and organisation skills.”

Nada Al-Mazrooa

"Carrying out an MA at the School of Modern Languages was such a positive experience. I learnt a lot from staff as well as colleagues in this well organised multi-cultural course."

Nada Al-Mazrooa, MA Translation Studies
