Mathematics and its Applications (BSc)
UCAS Code: G120/G111
Interest has grown in recent years in seeking mathematical solutions
to the many problems which occur in science, business and commerce.
This course has been designed to appeal to students whose interests
lie in applying their mathematical knowledge to a wide range of problems.
A good grounding in general mathematical techniques is provided as a foundation for understanding the more specialised applicable branches of mathematics, which include computing, numerical analysis, applied probability, statistics, operational research, and applied mathematics.
Many of the staff within the School of Mathematics have firsthand experience of applying mathematical principles to practical problems. This adds vitality to the courses by the inclusion of case studies, research activities, etc. so that you will be constantly made aware of the applicability of the subject matter of your studies. Many students on these courses undertake a project in their final year in place of one or two modules.
Those on the four year scheme are able to undertake a twelve month professional training period between the second and third academic years of their degree scheme. This gives a further opportunity to consolidate their academic knowledge by reference to problems occurring in a scientific or business environment. The academic parts of the three and four year schemes are identical.
Most of the the first year is common with the Mathematics, Operational Research & Statistics schemes (BSc). This enables students who wish to do so to transfer at the end of the first year, subject to a satisfactory performance in the examinations. Transfer to Mathematics (BSc) is also possible subject to a suitable choice of modules.
