Placement year

You can work as a mathematician or statistician if you choose to take a professional placement year.

You will have support to apply for placements that appeal to you from a wide range of industrial partners. Placements are available in Cardiff, across the UK and also internationally and most have competitive salaries.

I had always wanted to study maths, so when initially applying for university, I only chose courses with an opportunity to do a placement year.

When you are on your placement, your work will be directly supervised by your placement provider. You will be working on real problems and using mathematics to produce results.

You will also have close contact with our Mathematics placement coordinators so you can discuss your progress and get the most out of the year. This will include visits as well as regular email contact.

If you haven't made up your mind about taking a placement when you apply there is flexibility to transfer between the three and four year courses at the end of your first year, subject to your academic performance.

I have had an excellent placement year at NATS; having had the opportunity to get involved in a number of interesting projects such as the Annual Delay Forecast, iFacts Implementation and Runway Capacity Studies. These have broadened my understanding of many of the processes that go on at NATS and in the aviation industry.
