Educational Awards in Sierra Leone
Our partnership with the University of Sierra Leone began in 1999. An educational fund was set up in 2001 to support school children in the capital, Freetown.
Although all children in Sierra Leone are now entitled to a free primary school education, families have to pay fees for secondary education - as well as cover costs for uniforms, books, other equipment and exams.
This means that many families simply can't afford to send their children to secondary school. Fewer than one in five children currently have this opportunity. These educational awards make a real difference.
Awards go directly to families with amounts of up to £40 per student depending on the year of study. Awards are prioritised for children who have completed their primary education in a state-funded school and may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend or complete secondary school.
The fund was registered as Education Awards in Sierra Leone (EASL) with the Charity Commissioners in 2010.
