2nd Year English Literature and Philosophy
I moved to Cardiff from Cornwall for Uni and have enjoyed it immensely. I have been interested in a career in education for a number of years and so the Student Tutor Project was a great opportunity. Outside of work I enjoy playing tennis and football.
Where I tutor
I tutor at Adamsdown Homework Club. The club has been running for three or four years now. It is run by primarily volunteers with the help of the Student Tutors. The club has sessions for all years from KS2 up to A-Level and tries to create an informal atmosphere where the kids feel comfortable to work and enjoy themselves.
My favourite memory from the Student Tutor Project
It’s always fun organising and doing the after break activities at the Homework Club. We have done mock trials, making rap videos and trained the kids as Children’s Commission Ambassadors. It gives the kids a chance to try out different activities and allows for us to get to know them outside of tutoring.
What I’ve gained from the project
I have gained experience and insight into a career in teaching. It also has been good to be able to keep my hand in a number of other subjects outside of my degree. The work at Adamsdown also tests your interpersonal and initiative skills and I feel I have improved in both areas.
