Emma Smithers

emma-smithers2nd Year in Genetics

About me

I am currently at Cardiff University, originally from a town just outside of Birmingham called Redditch, studying Genetics. I did Maths, Chemistry and Biology at A level and tutor Maths. Outside of university I like cooking, travelling and socialising.

Where I tutor

I currently tutor two sessions on a Monday evening and Saturday morning at Adamsdown Homework Club. The Monday session is for years 7 and 8 and the Saturday is for years 5 and 6. The Homework Club is held in a community centre and we usually structure the sessions so that the children do an hour or so of homework (if they don’t bring homework we give them worksheets in Maths or English), followed by a break with drinks and fruit, followed by an after break activity, which is usually organised by one of the tutors or volunteers and can be anything educational. There are normally around 12 children in each session. I find the Homework Club to be full of friendly people with a really nice learning atmosphere.

My favourite memory from the Student Tutor Project

My favourite memory from the project so far would be teaching the pupils Maths games they can play in groups – and then playing the games with them. The pupils became obsessed with one particular game known as ‘21’, which they now opt to play as an after break activity. The boys are especially competitive and strategic.

What I’ve gained from the project

The project has helped me to become more aware of the different projects going on in and around Cardiff, and has helped me appreciate how hard some of the pupils that come to Homework Club work and how ambitious they all are. On a personal level I really enjoy spending time with the pupils and find it really rewarding when they are so keen to learn and make lots of progress.
