How the Student Tutor Project works
We recruit and train Cardiff University undergraduates to work with partner organisations at different locations around the city of Cardiff. These are the ‘Student Tutors.’ They provide one-to-one and small group tuition within secondary schools or after school homework clubs organised by our partners.
Each Student Tutor provides at least three hours a week of tutoring in either Maths or English. In the case of Homework Clubs, the Student Tutors are sometimes asked to help with topics ranging from Sciences and History to Welsh as well.
We work with pupils from top junior to those who are just about to apply for university. Our work raises aspirations. They are fun and trusting relationships with young adults who have just made that leap in to university impacts on what might be possible for young people in communities where few do progress to university.
“Working in this area you get to work with lots of students who are from poor backgrounds and none of their family members have been to university. I am also from a working class family and I’m the first one out of my family to go to University and I do think that I wish I’d have maybe had someone around the age of 20 to 21 to be able to speak to about UCAS, about which courses are the best university choices, things like that. I think that would have helped me.”

We recruit Student Tutors from a diverse range of ethnic and social backgrounds who have achieved the highest grades in their respective subjects. In 2012 we trained 45 students to help support and inspire young people’s education. Ongoing training develops their skill throughout the year, enabling Student Tutors to gain in confidence as they provide one-to-one and small group tuition in their subject
“The students from Cardiff University have been fantastic. They bring energy to it. They are professional but they bring an enthusiasm for their different subjects. We’ve had seminars on subjects as diverse as bio-mechanics to law.”
