What is a ‘child’? This course offers an introduction to the world of children and young people for those interested in sociology, psychology and youth-work. The course looks at how our ideas of childhood change across time and culture and explores contemporary issues and debates surrounding children and young people such as outside play, poverty, bullying and the internet.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone who is interested in understanding how the world we live in impacts upon development through childhood and into adolescence. This course will be useful for those wanting to take the next step after the Child’s Play! Course and for those who wish to continue studying to degree level in the social sciences. This course is open to all and no prior knowledge is assumed.
Learning and Teaching
There will be opportunities to develop study skills and to learn about research studies. The emphasis of this course is on active learning and small group work.
Coursework and Assessment
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
You may be asked to keep a course journal or put together a portfolio. Our assessments are flexible to suit the course and the student.
Readings will be provided by the tutor.
