COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides opportunities to use English appropriately for academic study. It will focus on the essential skills required to perform well in an English-speaking academic context.

Who is this course for?

Anyone with an interest in learning to use English appropriately for academic study. All are very welcome!

Course structure

Learning and Teaching

Learning and teaching are undertaken by means of small group work. Sessions will include class exercises and the use of stimulus materials, and there will be plenty of opportunity for discussion.

Assessment

The basis of assessment will be a portfolio (c. 1000 words) that includes several fragments of your own reflective learning journals from the course, quizzes and questionnaires and other tasks designed to enhance the learning experience and develop and progress students’ skills and confidence.

To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.

Reading suggestions

The tutor will recommend specific books, articles and web sources, but the following book will be useful:

Hamp-Lyons, L and B Heasley (2006). Study Writing: A Course in Written English for Academic Purposes (Cambridge University Press)

Library and Computing Facilities

As a student on this course you are entitled to join and use the University library and computing facilities. You can find out more about these facilities on our website www.cardiff.ac.uk/learn under Student Information, or by ringing the Centre on (029) 2087 0000.
