Widening Access

Student Tutor Project

A student tutor at AdamsdownThe Widening Access Team at Cardiff University is working with inner city's schools and colleges; in particular children from families who have little or no history of going to university.

The project aims to:

  • Raise attainment and achievement
  • Demystify the university student experience
  • Raise aspirations to enter Higher Education
  • To provide one to one support for students who have the potential to continue their education post-16, but come from backgrounds where higher education is not the norm.
  • To raise the achievement of those school students involved in the scheme, that are at risk of under-achieving

For this purpose, we recruit existing Cardiff University students to work with us as Student Tutors.

The Student Tutors:

  • Provide support in Maths and/or English language in the classroom under the supervision of a teacher.
  • Help school students acquire and develop study skills.
  • Help raise school students' self-esteem, motivation and confidence.
  • Help raise school students' awareness of their opportunities, in particular of higher education.

We provide support for pupils from different ethnic backgrounds, from year 7 to A-levels; students that struggle to keep up in class and would benefit greatly from extra support by our student tutors.

Schools and Homework clubs in Cardiff are allocated two to four Student Tutors to provide support in either Maths or English. Each Student Tutor will provide support for at least three hours once a week in either Maths or English.
