With unemployment rising and the job market forecast to get even harder, no-one would deny that things are particularly tough for graduates at this time.

That’s why Cardiff University is taking steps to equip new graduates, and those who have been employed but are now out of work, with the skills they need to find a job.

So, how is the University helping graduates maximise their employability? By developing a free, three-day ‘Employability Skills’ course.

By the end of the three days, graduates will know how to: market themselves effectively … identify their personal preferences, strengths and skills … implement research strategies to anticipate the needs of employers … gain access to the ‘hidden’ employment market … explore self-employment … understand the key skills employers want … produce effective CVs and application forms … create a realistic plan for their continuing search for employment.

Within the university, the Centre for Lifelong Learning has partnered with the Careers Service to create this unique course.

“The partnership is a commonsense approach to supporting unemployed graduates. It’s the perfect marriage of careers advice and training,” said Dr Richard Evans, Dean of Lifelong Learning. “We’re delighted to be working with the Careers Service in this exciting new venture.”

“We care about the future of our students and want to do all we can to prepare them for their working life. The Employability Skills course is one of the ways we can do this,” added Les Rees, Director of the Careers Service. “Our efforts will enable graduates to identify the skills and experiences they currently have, address any gaps, and market themselves effectively, and will also contribute to economic and social growth in South East Wales.”

Being equipped with employability skills is key to a graduate’s ability to secure a job in the current economic climate. This course will empower, equip and encourage them, so that they can embrace the challenge of finding employment with confidence.
