Coaching and mentoring is used more and more, supporting individuals achieve their goals in many areas of life. Within the 10 weeks you will understand what it is, how it works and how to do it. As a coach or mentor the course will develop your ability to establish rapport, develop listening skills and the ability to pick up and respond to issues raised by your client. In the safe environment of the classroom new skills will be practiced each week. Along-side your developing practice, recent research will help inform class and individual reflection and evaluation.

The course is open to all.
Learning and Teaching
The syllabus includes:
- What is coaching and mentoring
- Understanding the components of the relationship with clients
- How rapport is established – communication skills / active listening.
- Dealing with diversity issues
- Support techniques – Egan Skilled Helper
- Motivation strategies – Goal setting
- Boundaries and confidentiality.
- Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for achievements
- Contexts for coaching – case studies
Coursework and Assessment
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
The assessment for this course is will be ongoing through small exercises, some practical and completed in class, others set as homework. In addition a longer written assignment of 1000 words will be required which may be delivered to the class as a presentation. (This will be agreed with the class in the first few weeks)
The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. Our methods are designed to increase your confidence and we try very hard to devise ways of assessing you that are enjoyable and suitable for adults with busy lives.
