Psychology topics include the study of Neuro-linguistics and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with a progression course also offered. Counselling courses are increased this year to offer courses at the weekend and new perspectives to students in this always diverse and interesting subject area.
Students can put their credits from any Social Studies courses towards the Foundation Certificate in Social Studies (60 credits) to boost your personal and professional portfolio. For further information please contact Jan Stephens, the Co-ordinating Lecturer.

Social Studies Courses
Abnormal Psychology
You will have an opportunity to explore in some depth the differing models of abnormality and their implications for treatment. Each perspective within psychology has its own concept of the cause - you will be encouraged to challenge, compare and contrast theories to develop a 'best fit' theory or an integrated eclectic mix of evidence-based explanations of behaviour.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a values based behavioural therapy with a mindfulness component. ACT is evidence based and has an ever-growing range of applications, e.g. stress, anxiety, self esteem and confidence. ACT is a down-to-earth approach of being true to one’s values and to apply them as a basis for goal setting and achieving greater vitality.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy II
ACT II develops many of the ideas from the first Acceptance and Commitment Therapy course. This time we will draw on metaphors to explore ideas such as courage and confidence, fear and daring, to help us understand what motivates and stimulates us to live the life we desire.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - ACT on worry and stress.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - ACT on worry and stress. The course will focus on exploring stress versus mindfulness, worry versus caring, worry versus problem solving, values work, goal setting, getting `out of your mind’ and into your life, and ... why control is the problem!
Approaches to Counselling
This course gives students an understanding of a range of counselling approaches. You will have the opportunity to explore underlying principles and explore similarities and differences between them. It is suitable for those considering further training or those with an interest in finding out more about the origin and assumptions of counselling theory.
Basic Counselling Skills I
A down-to-earth course for the informal helper who is using counselling skills either in the workplace or at home. It will clarify and define the theory and practice of counselling. This basic course is also a prerequisite for anyone proceeding to Basic Counselling Skills II. Pre-enrolment is essential.
Basic Counselling Skills II
This follow-on course is only open to students who have successfully completed Basic Counselling Skills I. It gives you the opportunity to extend your understanding and ability to use counselling skills through exercises, role-plays and a journal. Please pre-enrol.
Child's Play!
Child’s Play! This course offers an introduction into the world of play and children’s development for people interested in Psychology and Child development. The course looks at the different areas of development and how play is able to support and encourage development. This course explores different stages and types of play as well as different theories of play.
Coaching and Mentoring
Mentoring is used increasingly for supporting individuals achieve their goals in life. As a mentor you will develop your ability to establish rapport, develop listening skills and the ability to pick up and respond to issues raised by your mentee. Although highly practical, the course includes theory to support reflection and evaluation of mentoring practice.
Developmental Psychology
What makes us the people we are? Babyhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age all present their challenges. There will be opportunities for discussion, observation and developing and improving study skills. This self-contained course is an ideal introduction to the subject area.
Introduction to Clinical Hypnotherapy
This exciting new course provides an introduction to Clinical Hypnotherapy and engages you to work interactively with the teaching. You will uncover the origins of Hypnotherapy, who uses it and how it works. You will understand how Hypnotherapy can help you in both your personal and professional life.
Introduction to Neuro-Linguistic Programming
This course provides an introduction to NLP in a dynamic and interactive way and gives an insight to its many uses. You will discover the origins of NLP, who uses it and how it works. You will understand how NLP can help you think differently, communicate more effectively, and boost your self-confidence.
Mindfulness in Counselling
This course will explore how mindfulness - awareness of present moment experience with acceptance - can enhance counselling core conditions and skills such as self-awareness, active listening, empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence. Some experience of counselling such as completion of Basic Counselling Skills I and/or II would be an advantage.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming: The Next Step
This course provides a further understanding of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and is open to all students who have successfully completed the Introduction to NLP. We will explore NLP techniques to gain deeper understanding of its many applications and uses. This highly practical course will give you a set of skills that can be applied to personal, business and therapeutic situations.
Social Psychology
Social psychology looks to explain the impetus behind our social interactions. This very interactive course introduces you to the principles of social psychology and to give a reference point to explore, explain and predict behaviours we are already familiar with. Students will develop their ability to understand and critically evaluate the motivation of these behaviours.
Understanding Childhood
What is a ‘child’? This course offers an introduction to the world of children and young people for those interested in sociology, psychology and youth-work. The course looks at how our ideas of childhood change across time and culture and explores contemporary issues and debates surrounding children and young people such as outside play, poverty, bullying and the internet.
