Course Description

The course aims to examine the framework of the English legal system as it applies to England and Wales. English law is steeped in history: it is a subject that is continually evolving, providing the student with the opportunity of recognising change and to understand why the change was believed necessary.
Topics such as the court system and its origins, the growth of alternative disputeresolution and changes to the legal profession lend well to debate as does the effect of membership of the European Union on the sovereignty of Parliament. Other aspects, including changes to the civil and criminal justice systems and the effect of the Human Rights Act 1998, provide further issues for consideration and discussion.

Who is this course for?

The course is intended for persons who wish to gain a knowledge and understanding of the sources, institutions, personnel and procedures involved with the operation of the English (and Welsh) legal system.

Learning and Teaching

This will take the form of a series of lectures, question and answer sessions, and discussions.

Coursework and Assessment

To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills that you have acquired. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects. The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. The Centre’s methods are designed to increase your confidence, much effort having been expended on devising ways of assessing that are enjoyable and suitable for adults leading busy lives.

Assessment is by means of a class test and written assignment.
