COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces the student to the legal landscape in the UK by looking at types of laws and how legal rules are made, interpreted, and applied. It explores Human Rights legislation including concepts of rights and justice. Finally, concept of laws relating to contract, property, tort and criminal law and their application are examined.
Who is this course for?
This course is open to all and no prior knowledge is assumed.
Learning and Teaching
The course outline is as follows:
- The features of British law and its development
- The operation of the British Constitution
- Doctrine of Precedent and its operation and relationship to statutory interpretation
- Do judges make the law
- Introduction to the Human Rights Act
- Overview of the common law and statutory rules relating to the law of contract
- Overview of the common law and statutory rules relating to the law of tort
- Overview of the common law and statutory rules relating to the law of property
- Overview of the common law and statutory rules relating to criminal law
- Summing up and conclusion
Coursework and Assessment
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
For this course:
The course will be assessed by submission of a reflective journal during the time of the course and a presentation.
The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. Our methods are designed to increase your confidence and we try very hard to devise ways of assessing you that are enjoyable and suitable for adults with busy lives.
Reading suggestions
Students will be supplied with handouts and reading suggestions throughout the duration of the course. There is no course text book but students should use the library facilities on a regular basis and, if possible, use the Electronic Journal facility.
