Course Description
This course is designed to help students of Public Service Interpreting courses to reach the level of oral and written English required for the DPSI examination. It will cover comprehension of public service related texts and correct use of English dialogue and register in public service situations. It will also include appropriate use of English in translation and use of idiomatic expressions, public service terminology, acronyms and euphemisms.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for speakers of English as a second language who have excellent command of oral English and competent command of written English. It will help students to expand their public service related vocabulary and develop oral confidence in the context of public service situations as well as formal letter writing and telephone skills.
Learning and Teaching
Students are given guidance in the use of correct grammar and spelling through formal letter writing techniques and translation into English.
The correct use of register, style and appropriate language are practiced through public service related role plays and familiarisation with subject specific terminology, use of idioms, euphemisms and sensitive language.
Students are encouraged and helped to develop their own public service glossaries. They are also given feedback on their pronunciation and practice the skills of paraphrasing and summarising.
Coursework and Assessment
- Oral competence and public speaking confidence are developed and tested through the use of role plays and class presentations, taking clarity and fluency into account.
- Listening and comprehension skills are developed and tested through questions on texts read in class by the tutor.
- Written skills are developed and tested through letter writing and translation exercises
- Class participation in discussions and group work count as part of the assessment.
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
