Public Service Interpreting

Co-ordinating Lecturer(s)

The Public Service Interpreting courses have been designed, with funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, to support bilingual students in their preparation for the examination that leads to the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI), a recognised qualification awarded by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (IoL). The DPSI is a first-degree level qualification (NQF Level 6) designed as a means of quality control for public service interpreters. The DPSI examination is open to anyone regardless of whether they have undergone any formal training and takes place once a year in June. More information about it can be found at www.iol.org.uk

We work closely with service providers and offer joint training sessions with their staff to ensure the training meets their needs.

Public Service (PS) interpreters normally work on a freelance or self-employed basis and there is little predictability of demand for their services. We are working with the Wales Interpretation and Translation Service (WITS) who are recruiting potential PS interpreters and are able to give some guidance regarding current demand for different languages.

There are courses in this programme that appear online only as they are offered on demand.

We offer a Foundation Certificate in PSI when students reach 60 level 1 credits from a portfolio of relevant courses listed in our web pages.

Cardiff University is an Examination Centre for Chartered Institute of Linguists (IoL) Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) qualification.
