Course Description
This follow on course from Greek for Beginners I will enable students to learn more basic structures of Greek in order to communicate at a basic level in everyday situations. Students will also get an insight into various aspects of Greek culture.
Though the emphasis is on speaking you will also learn more basic grammatical structures and sentence pattern. You will learn to:
- read basic letters and texts
- understand authentic dialogues and produce your own dialogues in group and/or pair work during the class.
Written exercises will be completed at home.
The following topics will be covered:
- Shopping
- Travel/Holidays
- Booking hotelrooms
- Talking about the family
- Colours
- Talking about yourself
- Expressing opinions.
Grammar:
- expressions: I want; I think;I can,
- use of the article as a substitute for nouns,
- possessive pronouns (emphatic)’
- declension of various categories of nouns’ ,
- future tense; past tense and subjunctive.
The textbook for this course is Epikoinoniste Ellinika: Communicate in Greek: 1 by Kleanthis Arvanitakis, Athena : Deltos, 2007.
Who is this course for?
This course is for students who have a very basic knowledge of Greek, who wish to be able to further improve their basic conversation when travelling to Greece.
Learning and Teaching
The emphasis of the course is on participation and students are encouraged to actively participate in class through various non-threatening forms of activities designed to stimulate communication.
Coursework and Assessment
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
You will not have formal examinations but you may have reading and listening class tests. You may be asked to write short texts as homework. Our assessments are flexible to suit the course and the student.
The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. Our methods are designed to increase your confidence and we try very hard to devise ways of assessing you that are enjoyable and suitable for adults with busy lives.
