This course will give you an opportunity to practise your speaking and listening skills in simple, everyday situations. Activities will be based around the topics covered in the French for Beginners class, but new students, who have some knowledge of French, are also welcome. You will develop your oral skills by talking about yourself, your family, ordering food and drink, asking for directions etc. Listening exercises will take place in one of our digital language laboratories.
You will learn how to greet people; how to introduce yourself and ask/answer simple questions; order snacks and drinks; talk about everyday activities; ask for/give the time; ask for/give directions and express preferences.
Who is this course for?
This course is for absolute beginners or people who have hardly any knowledge of French. In terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (DELF and DALF), this course, together with French for Beginners, prepares students for A1.
Learning and Teaching
Regular attendance is vital because in order to develop your linguistic competence, you need to participate and take part in the structured activities your tutor will organise every week.
Coursework and Assessment
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
You will not have formal examinations but you may have class tests. You may be asked to write assignments, keep a course journal or put together a portfolio. Our assessments are flexible to suit the course and the student.
The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. Our methods are designed to increase your confidence and we try very hard to devise ways of assessing you that are enjoyable and suitable for adults with busy lives.
The coursebook for this course is:
- BBC Talk French (Book & CD) – Released on 09/02/2006
For personal study, you would find additional material in:
- Foundations French 1 (Palgrave Foundation Series Languages), 2008, 2nd Edition; D. Bissar, H Phillips, C. Tschirhart; Palgrave Macmillan; Basingstoke (please note this would not be used in class).
If you want to prepare for DELF A1, the following book would be helpful:
- Préparation à l’Examen Du Delf A1, 2006 ; C. Veltcheff, S.Hilton ; Hachette.
Finally, the following grammar book would be useful:
- Grammaire Progressive du Français, Niveau débutant, 1998; M. Grégoire, G. Merlot; CLE International.
