This course is suitable for you if you learnt Mandarin Chinese part-time for one year.
You will consolidate your knowledge and further develop your language skills as well as your understanding of Chinese culture.
Topics covered include:
- telling the date
- asking for and giving directions
- making and responding to requests
- describing daily routines
- asking and answering questions about rules and service
- ordering dishes
- making a telephone call
- talking about living environment and places
- describing people's appearances and personalities
- talking about illness.
Grammar covered includes:
- forming sentences
- verbs and verb constructions
- prepositional phrases, adverbs
- adjectives and nouns
- numerals, quantifiers, and verbs
- nouns and noun phrases.
This course is for those who have a very basic knowledge of Chinese and would like to travel and live in China.

Learning and teaching
The emphasis of the course is on participation and students are encouraged to actively participate in class through various non-threatening forms of activities designed to stimulate communication.
Coursework and assessment
To assess the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved and to build up your confidence, we will design a combination of homework, class tests, oral continuous tests, and listening class tests. Homework will include reading, listening, and character writing practice.
