Learning Music Theory Online: Grade 3

This module is for students who wish to understand the theory of music to Grade 3 standard. Building on pre-existing knowledge to grade 2 standard (but making recap materials available for students who wish to refresh themselves first), the module allows students to explore concepts such as simple transposition, compound time, major and minor keys and simple phrase structure using online resources such as web pages, quizzes, videos and forum discussions. At the end of the course, students who complete all of the work will be able, should they wish, to enter themselves for an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) grade 3 theory exam in addition to the module credit they would receive for passing this course.
Topics covered in course (in addition to grade 1 and 2 content):
- Major and minor keys up to four sharps and flats
- Beyond two ledger lines
- Compound time
- Grouping notes and rests in compound time
- Four bar rhythms
- Simple phrase structure
- Performance directions
Who is this course for?
This course is intended for anyone interested in learning music theory and are curious to know more about how music notation works, building on previous skills gained in parts I and II if applicable. You will develop your understanding of music notation as well as how western music is constructed (through tones and semitones, scales and so on). You will also develop skills in writing down rhythmic ideas that you have composed. Through the use of discussion, you will bring questions related to your own musical experiences and how they connect with the theoretical concepts, and you will broaden your understanding through engaging with these questions.
Learning and Teaching
The module will be delivered entirely online, using Learning Central. Resources will include pages dealing with each concept, interactive quizzes and short video packages. You will be able to engage with the tutor and your fellow students via discussion boards. The content will adhere quite closely to the ABRSM theory syllabus, to allow you to prepare for taking an ABRSM theory exam in future if you wish.
There will be two forms of assessment:
1. Interactive online quizzes (40%) – a number of interactive quizzes to allow you to gauge your understanding of the concepts covered during the course. A number of these can be offered, and you can opt to complete some or all of them, subject to a minimum number.
2. Mock question paper (60%) – designed to mimic an ABRSM exam paper, this allows you to gain experience of taking a theory exam. You can opt to do it in small sections, or complete it under exam conditions. Completed papers to be scanned and posted to Learning Central.
