The Scriptwriting Workshop online offers personal, long distance tutorial support via e-mail to both new and experienced writers who want to pursue a scriptwriting project of their own.

You will be given advice and feedback on your work on a one-to-one basis along with suggestions for revisions. This support is primarily aimed at students writing for television or film who already have a completed script to work on. Enrolment in advance, accompanied by some brief autobiographical details and a short summary of your chosen project, is essential.

Russ Gascoigne has written for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and S4C, his credits ranging from soap through to the top rating A Touch of Frost. He is a former BBC Drama script editor who has also worked as a script-reader/consultant for numerous TV/film companies including the Movie Acquisition Corporation and the European Script Fund.

Learning and teaching

Support is delivered via e-mail over a period of approximately ten weeks, the tutor offering students advice and feedback on their work (with suggestions for revisions and rewrites) as well as answering any questions about scriptwriting in general. The nature and extent of the support will be tailored to the students' individual requirements.

You will be expected to write in your own private time, with the guidance of your tutor, and to learn about revision, while at the same time becoming familiar with the fundamental concepts of scriptwriting.

Coursework and assessment

To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.

There will be no formal examinations. The assessment will focus on the script on which you work during the workshop, looking for evidence of progress in your scriptwriting skills.
