Exploring the Past

Exploring the Past has been developed to help you realise your ambition to study history, ancient history, archaeology or religion at degree level. It allows you to study within a timescale, framework and environment designed specifically to cater for the needs of busy adult learners.

Exploring the Past is made up of six exciting and innovative 10-credit modules in archaeology, religious studies and history – ancient, medieval and modern. The pathway is intended to prepare you for Higher Education, giving you the skills and experience you need to study these subjects at Cardiff University.

An exciting alternative to A Level and Access qualifications Unlike A Level and Access routes, the Exploring the Past Pathway is taught and assessed in similar ways to first year undergraduate courses and provides you with first-hand experience of studying at degree level in a vibrant Higher Education environment. Even better, you don’t need any prior qualifications to get started.

A clear pathway onto a degree
All students who successfully complete the Exploring the Past Pathway will automatically qualify for an interview onto either a full-time or part-time degree scheme in history, ancient
history, archaeology or religion. If you are then accepted onto a degree you will be eligible for ‘advanced standing’ of 60 credits. This means that credits from your Exploring the Past modules can contribute directly towards the first year of your degree.

A flexible route that fits around you
The Exploring the Past Pathway is designed to support and fit around adult learners with busy lives, with modules taught at evenings and weekends. In addition, you can take between one and three years to complete the pathway, taking modules as and when they
fit around your other commitments.

An affordable way into university study
The Exploring the Past Pathway offers a route into university that is flexible, open, inclusive, and affordable. Once you start studying on the pathway you can also access expert advice on the best way to fund your studies should you go on to a degree.

To receive further information about the Exploring the Past Pathway, contact Dr Paul Webster, Pathway Co-ordinator, by phoning 029 2087 5610 or emailing websterp@cardiff.ac.uk

Please note that if you already have a Higher Education qualification you may not be eligible for government funding if you decide to progress on to a degree.

‘Advanced standing’ applies only to single and joint honours degree schemes delivered solely by the School of History, Archaeology and Religion. It may not apply to degree schemes delivered jointly with other schools as they will have their own requirements.*Permission to ‘opt in’ 10 credits from Choices to the Pathway will be at the discretion of the Pathway’s Co-ordinator.
