This course introduces students to the major web applications: Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Flash, developing skills and confidence in using them to design and manage websites and graphically enhance web pages.
Students may download from Adobe 30-day trial versions of each of the proprietary software programmes to use for self-study during the appropriate section of the course. It is desirable that students have access to a computer with internet access for self-study between sessions.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for students with a basic understanding of HTML and CSS (ideally having attended Web Design and Publishing) who wish to further develop their web design and development skills and gain a working knowledge of the latest web development technologies using Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Flash.
Learning and Teaching
This module includes a mix of tutor-led explanation and demonstration with practical sessions. Each meeting opens with a brief demonstration; the main portion of the session comprises tutor-led practical work.
- Dreamweaver introduction: workspace: creating a website; making links and adding content; CSS in Dreamweaver; Dreamweaver FTP
- Using Dreamweaver’s CSS layouts; creating your own CSS layouts in Dreamweaver
- Spry widgets: menu bars; tabbed, accordion and collapsible panels; form validation widgets.
- Photoshop introduction: workspace; image resizing, cropping, adding text layers.
- Creating a web banner; vector shapes; importing Adobe Illustrator files; using selection and refine edge tools.
- Image optimisation and slicing for the web; adjustment layers; colour correction; unsharp mask.
- Layers and selection tools; Adobe Bridge; selections and masks; composite images.
- Flash introduction: workspace; make an animated face.
- Basic Actionscript; symbols and libraries; shape and motion tweening; motion guides; adding sound; animation project.
Coursework and Assessment
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
Assessed work will include assignments and the creation of a website.
The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning. Our methods are designed to increase your confidence and we try very hard to devise ways of assessing you that are enjoyable and suitable for adults with busy lives.
