Free Talk by Eileen Younghusband – An Extraordinary Life
Where: Cardiff Centre for Lifelong Learning, Senghennydd Road, Cardiff
When: Saturday 18th May 2013 at 12.00pm to 1.00pm
A personal account of Eileen’s life: including her work in the Filter Room in WWII, writing and publishing her books and her commitment to lifelong learning which has culminated in her receiving the British Empire Medal this year.
Having joined the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) in 1941 at the age of 19, Eileen began the important work of a Filterer Officer. After training at the home of radar, RAF Bawdsey, she went first to 9 Group, RAF Barton Hall and finally to the Fighter Command headquarters at RAF Bentley Priory, Stanmore.
Eileen has also taught English, bred pigs, run a perfume business, dealt in scrap metal and became a successful hotelier. As she signed the Official Secrets Act her story remained unheard for 30 years, though she has since written two autobiographies, Not an Ordinary Life (2009) and One Woman’s War (2011), dealing more specifically with her war time experience.
Eileen graduated from the Open University at the age of 87, and continues to campaign on health and education issues. She was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to lifelong learning.
