Dr Nick Niven-Jenkins
Nick Niven-Jenkins is a former Medical Policy Adviser at the Department for Work and Pensions responsible for Incapacity Benefits with a special interest in disability and functional assessment. He previously worked in neurophysiology, radiology, general practice and occupational medicine and has used evidence based research techniques to develop an assessment of musculoskeletal function, develop medical guides for benefit decision makers, training materials for personal advisers and to provide advice on post operative recovery times. He has designed and developed an interactive DWP learning site for medical practitioners supported by a range of materials including DVDs and desk aids.
He was a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists working group on Employment Opportunities and Psychiatric Disability (2002) and a member of Department of Health’s scoping workshop on a National Service Framework for long-term conditions (2001). He was also a representative of the Health and Safety Executive [UK] European Week for Safety and Health at Work (2000-2004) and a member of the strategy forum responsible for a European Union study on ‘Work and Absence’ at Surrey University (2005).
In 2007 he provided initial information on the development of medical assessments as part of the welfare scheme for the EU Phare Programme and was a co-author of a European Social Fund guidance on ‘Good practice in helping disabled people back into work’.
