Friday 24 January 2014 saw the official opening by Head Teacher, David Wylde, of the Confucius classroom at Ysgol Aberconwy.
The Confucius Classroom launch celebration was attended by Cllr Sam Cotton, Mayor of Conwy and MP Guto Bebb, with representatives from the Welsh Government, the British Council and Cardiff Confucius Institute also in attendance.
The launch included musical performances, dance and a poetry reading from pupils at Aberconwy High School. Following a Chinese lunch, guests were given a tour of the brightly coloured dedicated Confucius Classroom and were able to interact with pupils who were attending one of the many Mandarin lunchtime clubs.
With their dedicated teachers from China, Confucius Classrooms are able to offer Mandarin to pupils as part of their curriculum, as well as adapting subject areas such as History, Art and Geography to include fascinating insights into China. Chinese teachers at the Confucius Classrooms also extend their teaching activities to other schools in their catchment areas, making extra-curricular and more regular teaching of Chinese available to many schools that might not otherwise have the resources or funding to deliver such enrichment.
Mrs Ann Bradshaw, Deputy Head with responsibility for the Confucius Classroom said,
‘Today’s launch reflects the hard work of our teachers and tutors at Ysgol Aberconwy and we are delighted to have been awarded Confucius Classroom status. We have already seen the benefit of delivering Chinese activities within our school and other local schools and we look forward to being able to develop these activities further.’
