Welsh language opportunities

We recognise the demand for Welsh speaking graduates with journalistic skills.

In response to this demand, we have developed a Welsh language pathway for undergraduate students, with feedback from within the industry and from current students and graduates. Students will be able to develop an understanding of the industry and practice confidence in the Welsh language.

Using our world leading reputation for research, we are also developing the research produced and published through the medium of Welsh and about the media in Wales. This is used to inform our teaching while encouraging student involvement.

Joint Honours degree

For the first time, our students will have the opportunity to study a Joint Honours degree in Welsh and Journalism. This programme offers a wide range of core and optional modules which will provide students with a grounding in language and literature.

Students will also have the opportunity to specialise in areas of personal or vocational interest while being equipped to become well informed citizens in a media saturated society.

Academic and professional opportunities

Thanks to funding from The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, students can now study at least 40 credits a year through the medium of Welsh. This includes work experience, high profile guest speakers and extra-curricular opportunities.

We offer Welsh language modules designed specifically around the demands of the industry. These modules teach the fundamental principles of journalism, the challenges facing the industry in Wales and further afield while reflecting the subject’s range of academic research.

We have excellent relationships and partnerships with the Welsh broadcasters and other media institutions in Wales. Our network of professionals provides students with a range of extra-curricular activities. Read this Welsh language piece by Anna Griffin, a Welsh medium student who studied 'Yr Ystafell Newyddion' (the News Room) module as part of her degree to learn more.
