Migrations and the Media critically explores the global reporting of “migrations crisis”
Newly released Migrations and the Media critically explores the global reporting of “migrations crisis”, by bringing together original interdisciplinary research from many fields including migration studies and journalism studies.
This new book is co-edited by the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies’ experts in the field of migrations studies, Dr Kerry Moore, Bernhard Gross and Professor Terry Threadgold.
Its chapters examine some of the most important contemporary issues with which migration is entwined, investigating how migration is constructed as “crisis” within news narratives such as human trafficking and smuggling, asylum seeking and humanitarian reporting, climate refugees, and election debates.
Migrations and the Media also scrutinises the reporting practices through which migration coverage is produced, the responsibilities of journalism and the pressures facing journalists working in this area.
With migration becoming a hot topic of political and media concern in recent years co-editor Dr Kerry Moore described the book’s research background, “From our previous research on asylum, politics and the media, we were very aware that interpretations simply accepting migration as ‘crisis’ can be intensely problematic.
“In our book we were therefore interested in approaching the ideas of ‘migration‘ and ‘global crisis reporting’ critically, and in doing so, bringing into conversation important concerns about migration politics, social change, networks, mobility and communication.”
The book forms the latest release in the Global Crisis and the Media series from Peter Lang. The series is edited Cardiff University’s Professor of Media and Communication Simon Cottle.
