School to host public debate: Hacked Off? Reform, Regulation, Democracy and the Press

Later this month the School will host an open debate into the recent media scandals and ask where the public, the Government and the press itself now stand in terms of Reform, Regulation and Democracy.

Attendees to this "Question Time" style event will be given an opportunity to hear the views and opinions of expert panellists drawn from the worlds of journalism, politics and academia before joining the debate themselves.
The panel will consist of Ian Hargreaves, Professor of Digital Economy at Cardiff University, whose former roles as Deputy Editor of the Financial Times, an OFCOM Regulator and political communicator uniquely position him to provide insight in to the workings of the media industry.
Joining Ian will be Plaid Cymru Media Spokesperson Bethan Jenkins AM; Director of the Media Standards Trust and Hacked Off campaign Martin Moore; Western Mail Chief Reporter Martin Shipton; International Editor, Paid Content Robert Andrews and Online Sub Editor of the Independent Rob Williams, who will be speaking in a personal capacity.
The debate will address and attempt to answer these questions:
- Are our politicians too cosy with newspaper barons like the Murdochs?
- What happens when the press get too close to the police?
- Should journalists be more accountable to the public?
- Does the current regulator (the PCC) have enough teeth to keep the press in line?
- What does this scandal mean for the press in Wales?

This public meeting will be hosted by the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies and is organised by the Co-ordinating Committee for Media Reform (CCMR), which was set up in the wake of the phone hacking scandal to co-ordinate the work of advocacy groups and campaigners trying to protect the public interest in wake of the continuing phone hacking scandal and the Leveson Inquiry.
