Masters student Evrydiki Katsoulaki has won a One World Media bursary to write and produce a story about the hijab as a fashion statement.

Evrydiki was one of eight students selected by a panel of professional judges to receive an award after submitting her proposal titled ‘The Beauty Behind the Veil’.

The proposal set-out the basis for a print article to explore how Muslim women feel about the veil, it highlighted that the veil is often worn proudly by college girls or independent single women as a symbol of Islamic identity, and that their sexuality can be reflected through this fashion.

The judging panel which included Lindsey Hilsum, International Editor, Channel 4 News agreed and awarded the bursary.

Evrydiki will now attend Dubai’s fashion week in April before concluding her research in Jordan. Once completed, Evrydiki hopes to sell the feature to fashion magazines such as Vogue or Marie Claire.

The bursary is an initiative aimed at media professionals at an early stage in their career, who are given funding to cover a story in a developing country in order to promote engagement with international development.

It is funded by One World Media, who promote and support the media’s contribution to international development, human rights and education. One World Media is a non-profit organisation registered in the UK as a charitable trust.
