School to Train Citizen Journalists

The Chair in Journalism and the Media Training and Development Manager will be based in Bute Building
Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies will employ a new Media Training and Development Manager in the new year to develop short courses for its new Centre for Community Journalism and in doing so provide a skills platform for bloggers and citizen journalists.
The new Centre will tackle the needs of journalism’s new wave of online writers such as bloggers, citizen journalists and users of social media who may not have received formal journalism training but would benefit from a short course whose syllabus could include Media Law, Public Administration and Ethics.
Head of School Professor Justin Lewis, “We see the present and the future as very exiting yet challenging times for journalism. There have been many routes into journalism over the years which have given new journalists a framework in which to operate.
"But the new citizen journalists may struggle to avoid common pitfalls. We aim to provide an easily understood toolkit of essential journalism knowledge to aid the day to day writing of citizen journalists”
As the scheme develops a private website and mobile app are planned to provide reminders, suggestions and guidance after the course has finished.
2012 will also see the arrival of a new Chair in Journalism to head the school’s prestigious practice–based teaching courses in Cardiff’s Centre for Journalism which spans the broadcast, newspaper and magazine industries.
The Chair will succeed former ITN Editor-in-Chief Professor Richard Tait who has held the post since 2003. It is expected that at a time of rapidly changing new media business models the Chair will build on the School's ability to link journalism research and practice, and to contribute actively to contemporary debates about journalism.
Professor Lewis added, “Our previous Directors of the Centre for Journalism have had distinguished backgrounds in journalism, with experience of leadership and management. Typically it has been an ambassadorial role with the media industries, yet the successful applicant must also be able to deploy their leadership talents in an academic setting.”
The Chair in Journalism (Vacancy no. 671) is a permanent position and will receive a point on the Cardiff Professorial salary scale while the Media Training and Development Manager (Vacancy no. 669) is full time for six/nine months at £37990 - £44016 per annum.
