Rhodri Talfan Davies, who studied at Cardiff’s Centre for Journalism, has been appointed director of BBC Cymru Wales.

As director of BBC Cymru Wales Rhodri will now oversee some of BBC TV’s flagship productions including Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sherlock and Merlin.

After his time at the Centre of Journalism in the early 90’s, Rhodri began his career in BBC regional news in England before joining the private sector to launch the HomeChoice on-demand TV service and work for cable company NTL.

The new director was announced by BBC Director General Mark Thompson, who described Rhodri as someone who would “…bring with him a wealth of experience across journalism, radio, and the development of new digital services.

"His deep understanding of Wales - and the BBC's crucial role in the nation's life - will equip him brilliantly for the challenge of leading such a successful and ambitious part of the organisation."

Newspaper Director David English, who taught Rhodri while at Cardiff said: “I’ve been in touch to congratulate him and we all wish him the best. He’ll certainly have an interesting few years ahead with significant challenges facing public service broadcasting, not the least of which will be the cuts to BBC Cymru Wales’ budget.”
