Current Magazine students overwhelmingly endorsed the course at Cardiff
The Magazine option of the Cardiff Diploma in Journalism has been re-accredited by the Periodicals Training Council (PTC) for another two years.
The PTC, the body responsible for the accreditation of the UK’s postgraduate magazine journalism courses closely examined the programme’s features including programme outcomes, assessment and evaluation, facilities and production, recruitment and guest speakers.
The highly complimentary report delivered by the accreditation panel noted the programme’s “commitment to staying abreast of developments in the industry” and in doing so ensuring students were “equipped for the challenges facing them”.
The report continued by commending the care and attentiveness shown to students by tutors and also teaching methods which upheld journalistic principles.
Work placements which take place over Easter each year were described as “superb” while the calibre of guest speaker was described as “excellent” with influential industry speakers such as Nick Brett, group editorial director at BBC Worldwide Magazines and Mark Payton, editorial director at Haymarket Consumer Media taking part.
Tim Holmes, the Magazine course Director welcomed the panel’s comments. “The fact that we can genuinely claim to combine teaching the bedrock skills of journalism (finding, researching and authenticating original stories) with multiple means of telling those stories (print, online, video, audio, social media) puts us in a very good position.
“The training our students receive to ‘platform’ for the readership as well as write for the readership by understanding that different readerships engage differently with the various forms of digital publishing, was considered very important.
“I’m personally very pleased our students overwhelmingly endorsed the course at Cardiff. This not only reflects the efforts of everyone who makes a contribution to teaching and training but also to the professional environment we place the students into from the very moment they arrive”.
