Carwyn Jones is interviewed by Broadcast Journalism student Hannah Green
On his first visit to Cardiff University since becoming First Minister, Carwyn Jones AM met Head of School Professor Justin Lewis and Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant during a visit hosted by the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.
During the visit the First Minister was briefed regarding the school’s contribution to national and international research in the areas of Journalism Studies; Race, Representation and Cultural Politics; Risk, Health and the Media as well as the University’s key developments such as the Maindy Park site.
The First Minister also received a tour of the School’s journalism training facilities including the broadcast TV studio, TV gallery, newspaper newsroom and radio suites.
The joint visit which included the School of Architecture - which also has it’s home in Bute Building - concluded with a Q and A session where questions surrounding Wales’ media industry and the now scrapped Independently Funded News Consortia’s plans to provide a news service for ITV Wales were put to the Minister who expressed frustration that Wales would not have a commercial news provider.
Following the visit Professor Lewis commented: “Our students enjoyed meeting the First Minister, who quizzed him on wide variety of issues. We showed him some of their work during the tour and he commented on its professionalism.”
“It was good to hear his commitment to the importance of keeping high quality journalism in Wales – one we obviously share!”
Leighton Andrews, the Welsh Minister of Wales who was Carwyn Jones’s campaign manager during the leadership contest, has worked for the School and is an Honorary Professor.
